The two images below were published in the Illustrated News of the World on the 8th October 1859. The owner is named as the late Thomas Cubitt (d.20.12.1855) He was the renowned London architect. The works employed as many as 700 people. The article appears to be a shorter version of an article which appeared in The Atlas on the 20th August 1859.(Download Transcript) The site covered some 85 acres and was too large for any one firm. The executors had formed the Burham, Pottery, and Cement Company to purchase and work the property under the Limited Liability Joint Stock Act |
