A picture of Aylesford Bridge by
J.M.W.Turner (?1799) appears to show an earlier structure.
You are invited to view the picture:
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-aylesford-bridge-and-church-kent-d00864
An interesting feature is the tower
on the bridge. On the same webpage are Turners'
sketches. These do not appear to show a tower.
If the colour of the stone is a true representation, it would
appear to indicate that the earlier bridge was constructed using
the brown sandstone from the Hastings Beds at Aylesford. see
